The Unified Port of San Diego Successfully Executes America’s Cup World Series with the Help of Heritage Security

While the weather may not have been its average 70 degrees and sunny in San Diego this past weekend, that didn’t stop the launch of the America’s Cup World Series, which featured fleet and match racing November 12-20, 2011. Both the America’s Cup and the Port of San Diego utilized Heritage Security Services to provide security for the massive event that required the shipping and receiving of 100 shipping containers and sleek race boats that arrived on October 27th at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. The cargo endured a month-long journey to San Diego, and arrived aboard the HR Constitution from Plymouth, England. The freight was then transported by truck to the Broadway and Navy Piers on North Harbor Drive, the grounds for the America’s Cup Village. San Diego was the first U.S. port to host this next-generation of high-speed, rapid America’s Cup-level of racing.

As a long-time partnership, Heritage Security has proudly serviced the Port of San Diego for the past 14 years, and was honored to leverage the opportunity to work with the America’s Cup logistics team for the first time, and ensure the security for this sizable event.

Wondering what it takes to put together an event of this magnitude? Check out this video from the Port of San Diego to get an inside look at the logistics that make this event a huge success.

Are you prepared for an emergency?

The blackout last week left 1.4 million people in San Diego, Mexico & Orange Counties without light, electricity, gas, and phone-lines and many unanswered questions.

Don’t be caught off guard the next time a blackout, natural disaster or emergency occurs. Now is the perfect time to create or update an emergency disaster preparedness kit for your home/work/family. You’re advised to have an emergency kit that will sustain you for at least 3 days.

Click here to download a PDF checklist for your emergency disaster kit.

Make sure you have enough supplies for each member of your household. And last but not least, place your emergency kit in an easily accessible place that everyone is aware of and can get to, should the need arise!

“Is my food in the fridge safe”? – After a blackout

We hope everyone in San Diego and Orange County is safe this morning after yesterday’s unexpected power blackout. After the excitement, however, with the power being out for over 1.4 million residents for over 12 hours, the question of today is: “Is my food in the refrigerator safe to eat?”

A general rule of thumb is:
Freezer:
If your freezer is full, food will hold safely for 48 hours (2 days).
If your freezer is half full, food will hold safely for 24 hours (1 day).
A closed freezer door will help keep the insulation and air cool, so hopefully you didn’t open your freezer door much!

For foods in your refrigerator, here is a link to the United States Department of Agriculture, Food & Safety Inspection Service that lists foods that may be in your fridge/freezer and if to discard or refreeze and keep. (Scroll to the bottom to see the food chart)
Click Here: Keeping food safe during an emergency

Make sure to use common sense – meats, poultry, seafood and dairy should likely be discarded. And if you’re ever in doubt – play safe and toss it!

“Not just a job” …

Last week, an old car pulled up to the curb and the man inside waved me over to his car. “Remember me?” he inquired.

I had absolutely no knowledge of who he was so he continued talking. Months ago, he was a drunk panhandler outside of Noodles at our retail center. He related how he had no job, drank daily and used panhandling to earn his drink money. He related how I had approached him, explained my need to remove him from the property and escorted him off the property. That – I did recall.

Then, the mood changed. The man went on with his thoughts and related just how embarrased he was to be removed in public. He related how kind I was even in removing him from the plaza. He continued his tale by mentioning he went home so sad that an old man was still working and he, as a younger man, did nothing with his life. The very next morning, he mowed yards going from house to house. He then gained employment with a landscaping company and continued mowing. He had worked his way up to a better job with the same company. Now, he has an apartment and even purchased an old car. His drinking days were behind him and he just had to come back and say ‘Thank You’…..

I relate this on to you just to mention that no job is too large… or too small. These are the rewards in life.
